Developed to determine the moisture of paper samples, the speed dryer removes water quickly and accurately. It is also used for heat drying of nonstandard handsheets for various experimental purposes.

When determining the moisture content it is essential that samples are not overdried, since this will cause weight loss in the cellulose and result in incorrect data. It is equally important that all moisture is driven off without damaging the fibers. Hence the even application of heat to samples at the correct temperature is essential.

The speed dryer has an electrically heated heavy aluminum plate that provides a very stable heat source for drying paper samples. A heavy- cast aluminum cover, hinged at the rear, is fitted with a non-asbestos breathable fabric cover that functions as a dryer felt and presses the paper sample or hand sheet firmly against the heated plate. The mass of the aluminum plate eliminates any significant drop in temperature due to the drying load.
