烟度计是测定汽车排出废气中烟度的仪器。主要用于柴油机排出废气的测定。用活塞抽气泵从柴油机排气管中，按规定时间抽取一定容积的排气气体，并使之通过一定面积的滤纸，排气中的烟尘粒截留在滤纸上并使滤纸染黑。用光电测量装置测量滤纸的吸光率，该吸光率表示排气中烟度的大小。烟度计主要由活塞抽气泵、取样装置和光电测量装置组成。测量一般重复3次，求得算术平均值作为测得的烟度值。烟度值的数值范围为0-10，空白滤纸的烟度为零，全黑滤纸的烟度为10。
